تسهم أشياء المکان في تکوين الفضاء وتشکيله ضمن العمل الروائي, فلا رواية بدون أشياء تعمل مع مکونات السرد الأخرى في تشکيل العالم السردي للرواية, وهي ليست مجرد أشياء يضج بها المکان, وإنما هي أشياء ذات دلالة على المکان ومن يسکن فيه, ومن هنا جاءت أشياء المکان في روايات زيدان متعددة الدلالة, عن ساکنيه وبيئته وعصره, فکان هناک الشيء الدلالي, الذي انقسم إلى دلالات أربع هي: الدلالة الإيحائية, والدلالة المرجعية, والدلالة المتحولة, والدلالة المحوَّلة, کذلک من أشياء المکان: الشيء البطل, والشيء الثانوي, والشيء الوظيفي, والشيء المؤنسن, وکلها تعمل مع الشيء الدلالي في تکوين المکان, وتأسيس الدلالة الخاصة به.
