The relationship between art and reality is not without compli-cations. It determines the main role of both art and reality. This deter-mination of role precisely can tell us about the nature of art itself: whether art is only for entertainment and enjoyment, or if it stimulates temporary Schein, i. e. illusion, or if it would only be a revolt. This study analyzes the German American philosopher Herbert Marcuse's vision of art, in the light of the major concept of negativity. It explores and illustrates how art can revolt against the repression of society, in the age of capitalism and the reification of art. By exploring the mean-ing of the concept of negativity, which Marcuse sets in tension with the idealist concept of Schein, sometimes coming to replace it, the study argues that Marcuse has introduced an important vision of what true art is and deeper insights as for which role art should play.
